Winters in Pittsburgh are always unpredictable, however, the most recent edition of the Farmer’s Almanac predicts a forecast of heavy snow, with five coastal storms that are expected to bring winter weather throughout the region.

In its 200th year of publication, the Farmer’s Almanac uses a formula devised by founder David Young, first used in 1818, that utilizes actions such as sunspots and tidal action in addition to other factors.

Dubbed, “The cold, the dry, the wet, and the wild,” this winter’s predictions include colder than normal temperatures for the eastern and central regions, of which Pittsburgh and Western PA are part of. Snowfall in the eastern region, specifically targeting Pittsburgh, is expected to be above normal, with snow expected to start as soon as the beginning of November.

The coldest periods of this winter will be from early to mid-January, late January into early February, and late February, with the most heavy snow expected in late January and early to mid-February. In addition to the Almanac, the National Weather Service also predicts precipitation levels will be heavier than normal from December through February of next year.

is simply a convenient channel through which water can flow. A trench is filled with gravel, allowing the water to run freely through it, and into a perforated pipe located at the end of the trench. The water is then emptied at a distance that is deemed to be safe, preventing the buildup that leads to saturation and flooding.

The actual bottom of the trench should have an ideal slope of approximately 1 in per 8 feet in the desired water flow direction. Where the water should be diverted to is dependent on the property. Some common areas are:

The main function of a retaining wall is to hold the soil in place, preventing erosion and providing stability to sloped yards. Pittsburgh and most of Western PA has an abundance of yards and properties with uneven terrain, making retaining walls a necessity in many cases.

, a there are a variety of factors that go into determining the cost. Three of the main contributors to the overall cost of a retaining wall are the materials used, the height of the wall, and the length of the wall. However, there are a few other factors, depending on your property’s landscape, that can influence the price:

      Location of the retaining wall

If the area in which you are building a retaining wall requires extensive waterproofing or more structural reinforcement than normal, it will add to the cost of your retaining wall.

      The accessibility of the area

Areas that are more difficult to get to will make moving the materials necessary to construct the wall more difficult, thus increasing the cost. Areas that are easily accessible will reduce the total installation time, which will directly affect the overall cost.

, and trees as well. Mulching is the best way to conserve moisture as well as to protect the roots. Proper mulching ensures a more even soil temperature and helps to reduce erosion, particularly in yards and beds that have a slope.

Nothing is more unattractive or makes things look more unkempt than when weeds run rampant throughout a landscape. Luckily, you can cut down on how often and how much you need to weed your landscape by properly mulching. This goal is accomplished because you are covering the area with mulch which prevents potential weeds from getting the sunlight they need to thrive while they are at the beginning of their growth stage. Mulching early reduces weed growth by ensuring the sunlight is blocked before the weeds can get a chance to grow or sprout.

In addition to reducing the time you spend weeding the garden, early mulching can help you save both time and money when it comes to watering your garden. By preventing the sun’s rays from hitting the soil directly, mulch creates a barrier that keeps moisture where it is needed most – in the soil, around your plants and trees. Moisture may also remain in the mulch, which creates a richer, healthier environment where your plants can thrive. With mulch on top, your soil retains moisture better than it would on it’s own, so your plants need to be watered less while thriving more.

There are some often overlooked benefits provided by mulching, too. Mainly its the contribution to your yard’s ecosystem and all of the little things that stem from this contribution that seems to be forgotten. Many helpful insects, fungi, and microorganisms prefer to make their homes in mulch, which, in turn, enrich the soil and provide protection from harmful insects, fungi, and microorganisms. Mulch also attracts earthworms, whose castings, or solid waste, act as a natural fertilizer and help to break down organic matter. The natural

Why Use a Licensed Landscaping Company?

Your home is your biggest investment, and your lawn is an integral part of your home’s value. Your lawn and landscape is the first impression that visitors will get of you and your property, so a well maintained yard certainly gives your home or business great curb appeal.

When it comes to using a professional landscaping company, there are so many options out there to choose from, from small businesses that just provide grass cutting on a seasonal basis, to those with a wider range of services, such as hardscaping and snow removal. Whether you are renovating your current landscape, looking to add new features to your yard, or simply looking for regular lawn maintenance, it is important that you’re sure to go with a landscaping company that is licensed.

Many states, including Pennsylvania, have different licensing requirements, but the overall concept is the same – a license is designed to ensure that there exists a minimum level of competency to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the public. A professional license also assures you of an appropriate level of training, experience, and ethical practices.

The professionals at 20 Landscaping understand the importance of maintaining your lawn and landscape to ensure their long-term health and aesthetic value. Licensed and fully insured, we take pride in all of our work and make customer satisfaction our priority. We offer a wide range of services for residential and commercial customers in and around the Pittsburgh area. Whether you are looking for a one-time service such as a retaining wall or custom hardscape design, or if you require regular landscape maintenance, we are confident in our ability to exceed your expectations.

                    Why Choose 20 Landscaping?

does not involve set hours. A storm can arrive in the middle of the night just as easily as in the morning. If the snow accumulates in the overnight hours, it is important to wake up to a clear parking lot, so that your business is operational. A Commercial Snow Removal company that keeps “9 to 5” business hours cannot be counted on to perform the job all of the time, as needed.

is more than just shoveling snow – there has to be a place to remove it to, and a way to keep lanes and parking spaces to a maximum. Plowing a commercial property means making sure that the plowed snow does not block key entrances, prohibit parking, or discourage customers from entering.

Adding a Retaining Wall to Your Home

When it comes to the value of any property, one factor plays a key element – curb appeal. A house can have the latest updates and gadgets, but a place that lacks curb appeal strikes a sour note with potential buyers, who may not even stick around to see the inside.

One thing that has consistently scored high in the Return On Investment (ROI) is a property’s landscaping. Regardless of trends, landscape design is timeless, and does not depend on personal style like interior design. With a broader range of appeal, investing in landscaping can add up to 15 percent to the value of a home, and an average return of 100 to 200 percent.

Pittsburgh has a unique landscape, with many hills and elevated yards that, while allow creativity in landscape design, can often pose a number of issues with soil erosion and drainage. Retaining walls are common in Pittsburgh, however, many older homes have retaining walls that are old, that pose structural concerns as well as not meeting the current code requirements that many local townships have imposed.

While a retaining wall may seem like one of the more significant investments in terms of landscaping, it is often one of the most crucial elements to the home’s curb appeal. Not only does a retaining wall add structural integrity to a yard that is sloped, but the right retaining wall can add significant aesthetic value to the property. Today’s retaining wall materials are designed for looks as well as durability and function, and there are many choices that can complement your current landscape.

Tips for Maintaining Your Outdoor Patio

Many Pittsburgh homeowners have taken steps to prepare their yards for the upcoming winter season. However, for those with patios on their property, it is equally important to perform some maintenance to ensure that your patio looks its best and lasts for years to come. Your patio is an important investment in your property, and proper care is needed to protect your investment!

First and foremost, remove any patio furniture that can be damaged by the elements. Pittsburgh winters can be harsh, and your furniture needs to be properly protected. If you have patio furniture that is too large to move, be sure to buy the appropriate covering and cover it properly.

Letting leaves accumulate is not good for any type of patio material. Leaves retain moisture, which can lead to staining, mold and even pests. Leaving them on for the winter can mean that they will freeze to your patio, which will accelerate these issues.

Prune any trees, shrubs or foliage that overhangs your patios. Not only will it preserve the health of your plants, but it will prevent any overhang that can be detrimental to your patio when the snow accumulates. If you have large trees that need trimmed or removed, give the experts at 20 Landscaping a call to take care of it!

Last but not least, give your patio a good cleaning before winter. Using a pressure washer to blast a stone patio will clean and remove any algal and fungal growth that may have accumulated in the pores of the stone. You will be amazed at how renewed and fresh the stone on your patio looks. Just remember, A dirty patio now won’t magically clean itself over the winter – and will be even dirtier come spring! While you may not be pleased with having one more fall chore to do, you’ll be glad you did come spring.

Rock Design – A custom design of natural stone, boulders, flagstone, or even brick add a blend of natural elements to create a beautiful setting.

Flower Beds – If you are looking to simply expand your love of plants and gardening, there are numerous options when it comes to custom flower beds.

  Dandelion Control

Dandelions are an unwelcome sight all across Pittsburgh landscapes when spring comes to town. Even if your lawn is clear, they can be spread easily, up to miles, from other properties where they are thriving. And just when you think you have seen the last of them, more seem to pop up in their place. Hardy and hard to kill, dandelions are an unfortunate staple of almost every lawn at one point or another.

Controlling dandelions is not easy. Their roots can run up to ten inches deep and live underground throughout Pittsburgh’s fall and winter months. Pulling them up is often ineffective, as it is necessary to remove the entire root to prevent them from growing. Weed control can be tricky, as the wrong product can kill the surrounding lawn.

  Lawn Protection

Spring in Pittsburgh can be temperamental. Jackets in the morning and shorts in the afternoon are not an uncommon sight during the spring months. Unfortunately, your landscaping can be affected by this type of weather, particularly for those who are eager to get a head-start on planting. Overnight frost can happen even during the spring months, so it is important to know the measures to take should that occur:

If you have an area that can serve as a “greenhouse” until the weather is warmer, consider using that area. Planting in small pots and transferring them when the weather is more suited for them to thrive is always your best choice. It may be tempting to start planting outside early when those first few warm days of spring arrive, but remember that it may not be the end of those cold nights!

Mulching your landscaping beds serves several essential purposes. For starters, mulching protects your plant’s root systems from the heat and cold, which can damage the roots themselves. Mulch also helps the root systems to retain water, reducing their need for constant watering. In terms of soil, mulching adds valuable nutrients as well as reducing the formation of new weeds, leaving you with a clean-looking landscape bed that is healthy as well as pleasing to the eye.

The recommended amount of mulch is approximately one and a half to two inches deep, in order to be at its most effective. However, it is important to ensure that too much mulch does not build up at the base of trees or shrubs, as it can cause damage to the bush or tree. When to apply new mulch depends entirely on the needs of your particular space, a rule of thumb is every one to three years.

As far as the type of mulch, again, it depends on your particular conditions. Bark mulch is best for areas around trees and shrubs, and when you will not be doing a lot of digging that will disturb the mulch. Shredded mulch will decompose quicker, however, it will trap more moisture in your flower beds. Cedar mulch, while expensive, has natural oils in the wood that repel insects, and is a preferred choice in areas where termites are common.

Things To Consider In Choosing Your Hardscaping Design

  Changing your Hardscape Design

You may be familiar with the term “landscaping, which involves the use of plants and other biological elements to improve the appearance of an area of land. ” Hardscaping, however, deals with the “hard elements” of the land, such as decks, patios, walkways, and other non-living structures.

Properly planned, hardscaping elements are designed to improve the overall appearance of a property, not detract from it. Hardscaping elements have a number of almost limitless options, and it is important to find the right balance, to not only meet the needs of the homeowner, but to improve the aesthetic appearance of the home.

Texture is important in planning a good hardscape design. While using one particular texture can provide a lifeless, redundant appearance, too many different textures can make it seem cluttered and chaotic. This is a primary example of finding the right balance, a blend of textures that complements both the home and the landscape. This same concept should also be applied when considering color choices.

Knowing your space is the key to success in any hardscape design. Knowing exactly what space you are working with will help you to incorporate a successful design plan as well as a preliminary budget. In addition, it is important to familiarize yourself with your local building codes, so that you will know what is permissible, and eliminate any last-minute surprises.

Climate is another important factor in planning a hardscape design. Pittsburgh’s four seasons are known for their temperamental elements, and you will want to choose not only a design that is practical for the climate, but materials that can withstand the seasonal temperatures.

Consider your surrounding area. Do you have a pool, a patio, or other structures that you will need to build around? You will want materials and and overall design that not only complements these structures, but does not inhibit access to them or detract from them.

When it comes to hardscaping, 20 Landscaping is experienced in planning and implementing custom hardscape designs that not only improve the appearance of your property, but add to your property value as well. Cold Weather Landscaping tips

Winter and the frigid temperatures that accompany it are in full swing in Pittsburgh, with lawn care and landscaping the furthest thing from the minds of homeowners and business property owners, as snow removal services take priority. Because lawns are hidden beneath snow and ice, with growth dormant in the winter months, it’s a common misconception that there is no point to taking care of a lawn. However, taking just a few simple steps during the winter can lead to a beautiful landscape in the spring:

      Trim Trees and Shrubs.

Perennial plants fare well when pruned in winter (dormant) months. So now is the perfect time to trim any hostas, peonies or daisies, as well as shrubs and hedges on the property. When pruning trees, such as evergreen and deciduous ones, it is important to trim them properly, for the health of the tree as well as safety reasons. For trees that are large or have branches in awkward areas, contact a professional. When there is a snowfall, be sure to remove branches of excessive snow to prevent damage to the existing branches.

Keep your lawn free of debris and clutter.

Just because the grass is in a dormant stage does not mean you can start piling things on the lawn. Just as in the spring and summer months, objects kept on the lawn can choke the grass underneath and have ill effects. This includes in particular parking cars on the lawn.

Keep traffic on the lawn to a minimum.

Particularly when the walkways are slippery, people tend to make a path through the lawn on the way in and out. If these paths become frequently used, they can become excessively worn down, which will cause a late recovery time. Keeping the walkways clear is the best way to prevent this. You can mark out the edges of your lawn so that it does not get damaged when shoveling.

In short, it only takes a few preventative tips during the winter to have a lush landscape for the spring and summer! Pittsburgh residents or commercial property owners who are looking to have their landscapes winterized shouldn’t hesitate to call 20 Landscaping. While the snow has not yet hit the Pittsburgh area, it is inevitable that we will experience it at some point through the long winter. And when it does come, it is important to have a reliable Snow Removal Team that will ensure that your property is taken care of. The harsh elements of the Pittsburgh winters and the resulting snowfall can be damaging to your home or business, particularly for roofs and gutters. You want to have a Snow Removal Service that is experienced as well as dependable. While finding one can seem to be an overwhelming task, asking a few simple questions will help you understand the process so that you can find the right Snow Removal Company to help your property stay safe and dry all winter long.

Cleaning up Your Leaves in the Fall

Autumn in Pittsburgh is fully underway, and many of the leaves have finished changing color and are now at the process of leaving the trees to settle on the ground. While autumn in Pittsburgh can be a beautiful season, with the beautiful colors generated by the many different trees of the area, it brings with it a lot of outdoor yard work.

While many would prefer to ignore the mass of leaves on the ground and hunker down for winter, proper lawn care preparatory tasks are essential to ensure that your landscaping is healthier and more productive for spring. One important chore is fall leaf cleanup, which is an important step in reducing problems from pests and diseases.

This does not mean that it’s necessary for you to track down every single spare leaf located on your property, but piles of large leaves such as oak or maple can smother the grass underneath if not removed. In addition, fall leaves can produce diseases, such as anthracnose, a type of fungus common in many trees native to Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania, such as sycamore, white oak, elm, dogwood, and maple.

Just like people, plants, trees and grass need a healthy environment in order to thrive. Leaving fallen leaves, branches and dead plants increases the risk of disease and pestilence that can affect your yard year round. Fallen leaves are the ideal locations for pests and disease to harbor, as well as providing an excellent environment for fungi to grow, due to the trapped moisture and humidity.

Fortunately, there is no need for you to take on the daunting task of leaf removal. 20 Landscaping’s team of professionals has the proper tools and equipment, as well as the experience, to ensure that your lawn is free of leaves and other debris, so that you lawn will be healthy come spring. The inward conditions incorporate the structure, surface and constituents of soil, tree spread, field design and the various components and their vicinity inside of the scene. Outside conditions allude to the specific area of a scene, its surroundings and conceivable courses in which the area can be altered for a specific kind of improvement. The evaluation of finishing conditions is an initial phase in the arrangement of systems that organizers will demand scene architects use, when they take a gander at how an advancement will sit in a scene and how to alleviate its impact on the scene.

There are a few things a Year Round Landscaping arrangement and planning should be an effective one. As a matter of first importance, you have to comprehend what makes a decent year round landscaping arrangement in any case. To work, a year-round landscaping arrangement must be well thoroughly considered, and any potential issues managed. this implies taking such things as the measure of sun a piece of your yard gets every day, how much water it will get and if more may be required, and drainage into thought before you begin chipping away at your landscaping plan and arrangement. Seepage, drainage and watering system both are imperative issues that must be managed for a flourishing yard to be made.

Before beginning any kind of making arrangements for a scene one thing that is to be remembered is that there ought to be an equalization kept between the advantages of monetary advancement for society and the need of an eco-accommodating environment for individuals to live in. Each nation has various scene arranging frameworks for both the country and urban scenes. Urban park, green paths and scene arranging are all piece of the urban scene arranging framework; while in most provincial ranges, significant scene arranging will end up harm done to scenes as an aftereffect of certain man-made formative exercises like the impromptu cutting of trees.

Nature has given us excellent and captivating scenes. Governments have done a great deal to improve their magnificence through scene hiring so as to arrange, experts for this reason. This is the reason when you move into a nation you see that everything looks extraordinary and looks most appropriate to a specific spot.

Consent in scene arranging is imperative while doing any sort of alteration in the scene. An arranging application alongside the procurement of points of interest of the considerable number of alterations that are to be made as a piece of the advancement to be affirmed by the pertinent authorities is required much of the time. Scene arranging is exceptionally valuable to society; it can be utilized to distinguish risks or troublesome impacts of improvements on their surroundings, in addition to approaches to minimize these to shield the scene. In this way, arranging consent is as vital as whatever is left of the scene fashioner’s work and appropriate comprehension and advising must be embraced before presenting an arranging application.

  Eco-Friendly Leaf Removal

The striking colors of the leaves during the fall in Pittsburgh make it hard to realize that, eventually, these leaves will eventually fall and cover the properties of many home and business owners. Fall is the time of year when property owners are wrapping up their lawn maintenance and shifting their focus on leaf removal. There are some situations in which regular leaf removal is essential, such as a property where the leaf cover can be so thick that it can pose a danger of falling on leaf-covered pathways.

Regardless of whether the property is commercial or residential, leaf removal is essential to preserving the health of your lawn. The trees that are most commonly found in and around the Pittsburgh area, such as maple, elm, oak, and sycamore, produce large leaves which, when left on the lawn, can smother and kill the grass, or contribute to insects and fungal growth. A thick layer of these types of leaves can block the sunlight, as well as trapping and holding in moisture that is detrimental to the lawn and soil.

Managing and disposing of the leaves on your property can be a hassle as well as time-consuming. Each township in Pittsburgh has their own regulations and collection policies and schedules that each property owner must abide by for leaf collection. Fortunately, an increasingly popular eco-friendly solution has been allowing property owners to take advantage of the naturally organic material that can benefit their lawns.

One method is to chop the existing leaves into small bits and pieces with a mulching mower and leave them on the ground. If the leaves are larger, they may require a couple of passes with the mower. As these tiny bits decompose, they will add organic matter and trace nutrients to the lawn, improving soil quality. An alternative method is to bag the leaves with a mower while mowing the lawn. The tiny bits that are collected can be added to a compost pile, mixed into the soil, or used to add as mulch around existing plant beds.

Utilizing your mower into a mulching and leaf disposal tool not only provides benefits to the lawn, it is an extremely effective as well as time-saving method of leaf disposal. You are able to make use of organic materials that are already present in an eco-friendly manner that reduces waste and allows your property to reap the benefits.

  Retaining Walls

When your yard is in need of a barrier, a retaining wall is a necessary element of your hardscaping. Retaining walls are used to level out uneven ground as well as hold the soil in place to keep it from eroding, which can create problems on your property. A retaining wall can be built to serve a structural purpose or as as aesthetically pleasing complement to your current landscape. When you have a professionally built retaining wall, it can blend seamlessly with your existing architecture and create a functional yet appealing space.

In addition to serving their main function of leveling property and and preventing soil erosion, retaining walls have a number of other benefits that you may not be aware of:

Do you Need to Replace/Repair Your Retaining Wall?

While a retaining wall can be a beautiful landscape element as well as complementing the architectural style of your home, they serve an important purpose. The primary purpose of a retaining wall is to maintain a stabilizing structure that holds sloping ground in place, preventing erosion and movement of soil. It is important that the retaining wall be substantial and sturdy enough to accommodate and redistribute any pressure caused by sloping ground.

For this reason, when retaining walls fail, the results can be costly. A failed retaining wall can lead to collapse, damage to the surrounding property, or improper drainage in areas where water builds up.

Western PA, including the Pittsburgh area, is a region with many hills as well as new home building and business site expansion. There are also many older homes in Pittsburgh with older retaining walls, and these do not last forever, and knowing the proper signs to indicate that your retaining wall may need repaired or replaced will prevent any problems down the road. Some indications that your current retaining wall may need repaired or replaced are:

While it may be tempting to perform a “Do-It-Yourself” project or a “quick fix,” retaining walls are complicated structures that must be properly installed, particularly with the harsh elements of the Pittsburgh seasons. A properly built retaining wall must have a proper foundation, adequate drainage, and be constructed strong enough to withstand the harsher elements. Poorly built retaining walls that don’t adhere to these standards are many times doomed to fail, causing more damage as well as being more costly to fix.

  Pesky Weeds

Pristine green lawns are all the rage once the winter season breaks. The competition between neighbors is at its peak and who decides to ruin your chances of one upping the competition; weeds. Inevitably weeds will make their presence known and thus the constant war. As a lawn care company in the Pittsburgh area we would like to offer a few tips to help you keep weeds at bay and hopefully record a few victories.

      Choke Them

     – That’s right choosing a good grass seed is a step in the right direction to eradicating the weeds. Be mindful of the area you are treating and the surrounding vegetation. To avoid the risk of your grass competing for water and nutrients do not distribute the seeds all in one place. If you are not careful you could risk the seeds being wasted, being weak, and eventually killed off.

      Dress It

     – No not the weeds but the seeds you have just sown. You can use a variety of mixtures such as manure and alfalfa, compost, and other purchased mixtures. The idea is to top dress the seeds you sowed in order to enhance the quality of the soil which will in turn help the seeds to grow.

     – Do not leave your seeds thirsting for something to drink. At least once or twice a day the seeds should be watered. Preferably, there should be a light watering in the morning and then another in the late evening. Be careful not to overpower or wash the seeds away by using a strong spray. A light misty spray should do the trick. Continue this routine for a few weeks then it should be safe to switch to periodic and heavier water soakings which is better for your lawn.

     – Lastly it is important to keep your eyes open to see if the weeds reappear. All of the above measures do not guarantee you will always rid your lawn of the weeds but it does not give you a better chance. If the weeds do re-emerge then continue feeding your grass and repeating the whole process.

  Seasonal Lawn Care Tips

Although it doesn’t feel like it lately, Spring is just around the corner, and there is much that can be done to make sure that your lawn is a beautiful background for your summer outdoor activities. Maintaining a beautiful lawn is more than a “mow-it-in-the-summer” job. It takes year round landscaping in order to keep your lawn looking its best. 20 Landscaping in Pittsburgh can help you with that process.

Although it is the dead of winter right now, there are still things that can be done to protect your lawn and make sure that it is ready for the spring. Most important is to remember not to walk on the grass in frosty conditions if at all possible. Walking on frosty grass can cause the areas where you stepped to eventually die, and you will have to reseed these areas in the spring. Another helpful thing to remember is to pick up fallen leaves that remain from the Fall. Fallen leaves block out light and kill the grass underneath.

Once spring arrives, there is much work to be done. This is the time when your lawn really needs your love and care. Grass starts to grow again and relies heavily on water and fertilizer. Fertilizing in spring is essential for a beautiful summer lawn. Choose a fertilizer that is nitrogen-rich to encourage strong growth. Spring is also a great time for sowing seed as the soil is warming up and the typically rainy days will help to speed growth. Towards the end of spring, however, if the weather has been dry, your lawn will benefit from periodic watering with a sprinkler or hose. You will also need to start mowing the grass as it grows. For the first few times, mow once a week and keep the mower raised to its highest level (about one inch).

Summer is when your lawn will see the most action. Children playing, family barbeques, holiday celebrations. Your lawn will most likely need to be mowed once or twice a week, except during extremely dry periods. You should also week the lawn by digging the weeds out and making sure that you have taken the whole root. You can fertilize again in summer, but only if ther eis rain in the forecast as fertilizer will stress and scorch your grass if it is dry. You may also water your lawn during the summer. Grass recovers quickly from drought, however, so in times of extreme dryness, you can conserve resources by watering less frequently.

Summer eventually winds down and the temperatures start to cool into a temperate comfortable Fall season. Proper Fall care will help to make sure that the lawn recovers from the heavy usage of the spring and summer. It will also ensure that the grass is well prepared to survive the low temperatures that winter brings. Rake and remove all fallen leaves. As with the stray leaves you removed last winter, Fall leaves will block out the light that your lawn needs to keep growing. Fall fertilizers must be rich in not nitrogen as in the spring, but in potassium which will strengthen the grass and help it toughen up to survive the winter. Fall is also a good time to seed your lawn as the soil is still warm and the seed will have time to develop good strong roots before it goes dormant for the winter. Lastly, after you have cleared all of the fallen leaves, use a spring-timed rake to rip thatch and dead grass out of the lawn to encourage growth in the spring.
